Ways to Take IELTS
You can take the IELTS test in two formats, depending on your preference and convenience:
- Computer-Based Test (CBT): Take the test on a computer at an official test center. Get faster results (usually within 2-3 days) and enjoy flexible test dates with more availability.
- Paper-Based Test (PBT): Traditional pen-and-paper format. Some students find it more comfortable for reading and writing tasks. Results typically take 7 days.
- One Skill Retake Option
- If you didn’t achieve your desired score in just one section of the IELTS test,
you no longer need retake the entire exam.
With the newly introduced One Skill Retake option, candidates can now choose to reattempt only the section — Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking — where improvement is needed. - This feature offers greater flexibility and helps you focus on enhancing a specific skill without repeating the full test.
- Please note: The One Skill Retake option is currently available at selected test centers and may vary by country.

- IELTS Scoring Explained
-
The IELTS test is scored on a 9-band scale , designed to measure English language proficiency in a precise and consistent way. Each of the four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — is given a band score from 1 to 9 . The overall band score is the average of these four individual scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
Note: IELTS One Skill Retake
This option allows test takers to retake just one section of the IELTS exam rather than repeating the entire test.
It must be taken within 60 days of the original test date and is available only to those who took the computer-delivered version.
Before proceeding, confirm with the relevant institution or organization whether they accept the updated Online Score Report.
IELTS Dates
In India, paper-based IELTS Academic tests are conducted two to four times each month, depending on the test centre's location.
For the General Training module, test dates are available twice a month, typically scheduled on Thursdays and Saturdays.
